Nephrology is a relatively new subspecialty that emerged from the internal medicine core.  The need for this subspecialty was obvious as the kidney biopsy , dialysis and kidney transplantation became routine procedures.  Like the kidneys, who have multiple functions in the human body, a nephrologist is a physician trained to diagnose and treat the multiple and complicated medical problems that patients with kidney problems can experience.
